Explanation of the temple. The historical temple, both in Solomon's time and the temple at the time of Christ had many walls of partition and different levels for entry. The outermost was the "court of the Gentiles" which was at the base and was actually outside the temple wall. If any Gentile tried to go to the inside temple wall, the penalty was death. This outer area was as close as the gentiles could get to pay their respects to the Jewish God. Next inside the temple wall and above in elevation was the "court of the women". Jewish women worshipped there. 8 feet higher and inside yet another wall was the court of the men. All circumscised Jewish men who were not priests could enter here. The new two walled off levels were only for the priests. The last, highest and most inaccessible was the holy of holies where only one man could enter once a year on the day of atonement - that was reserved for the high priest only and was separated by a curtain. This was the curtain (which was several layers thick and may have been about a foot thick) that split in half when Jesus died on the Cross. The peace of Christ that one obtains through accepting His sacrifice for all people on the cross, "breaks" down all the walls and barriers that prevent access to God's presence. Now in terms of access to God, both Jews and Gentiles, males and females, preists and non-priests all have access through faith. In spiritual terms, this was a very serious and radical departure in the new covenant from the worship system instituted by God in the Old Testament to teach respect for the presence of God. It was also a graphic cultural picture when the hearers of the words of Eph 2:17 heard that the wall was gone. The physical wall(s) that protected God's presence in the temple was made of huge and utterly massive stones, 3 feet thick!
