Key to terms: ch-chain; sp-space; sl st-slip stitch; sc-single crochet; dc-double crochet; ch sp-chain space (the hole created by chain rather than a crocheted stitch);, 2ch sp-chain space created by 2 chains; rnd-round (group of stitches and chains that go around the square one time).
Notes: You will need twice as much white as red and green. This is for a Christmas color effect. Any 3 compatible colors can be substituted. G hook.
DIRECTIONS: First square: With White, ch4 and close
into a ring by sl st in first ch. Rnd 1:ch3,
2dc, ch2 in the ring. (3dc, ch 2) 3 more times in ring using a sl st to join to
top of ch3 instead of the last ch for total of 4 groups of 3dcs. Fasten off White.
Rnd 2: With right side facing, join Red in any 2ch sp
(corner) with sl st. ch3, 2dc, ch2, 3dc (in the ch sp), ch1. In next 2ch sp(corner)l (3dc, ch2,
3dc) ch 1. Repeat from l 2 more times
and finish round with a sl st instead of the last ch. Should have a (3dc, ch2,
3dc) in each corner. Fasten off Red.
Rnd 3:With right side facing, join Green in any 2 ch sp
(corner) with sl st. ch3, 2dc, ch2, 3dc. ch1. In the next 2ch sp, 3dc. ch 1. lIn the next 2
ch sp (corner) (3dc, ch2, 3dc), ch 1. In the next 2ch sp, 3dc. ch 1. Repeat
from l 2 more times
(for the 3rd and 4th corner)joining to the last corner with a sl st. Fasten off
Green.
Rnd 4:With right side facing, join White with a sl st in
any ch 2 sp (corner) ch3, 2dc, ch2, 3dc, ch1. In the next ch sp, 3dc, ch 1. In
the next ch sp, (2nd from corner) 3dc, ch 1. lIn the next ch 2 sp (corner) (3dc, ch2,
3dc), ch1. In the next ch sp, 3dc, ch 1. In the next ch sp (2nd from corner),
3dc, ch 1. Repeat from l 2 more times
(for the 3rd and 4th corner) joining to the last corner with a sl st. (do not fasten off)
Rnd 5: Continuing with White, ch 1, sc in each dc and 4sc in
each 2ch sp and 1sc in each ch sp all the way around. Join with sl st. Fasten
off White. Make 69 more squares to create an afghan by joining squares
with White yarn and yarn needle. You may create border by sc or dc all the way
around outside (with 3 sc or dc in the corners). Add fringe if desired.
